About Plans

Our carbon emissions are still increasing, and the evidence for dramatic climate change is all around. We want to do our part in solving it.

In Europe, 12% of our carbon emissions come from heating our homes - just as much as using our cars. Getting those emissions to zero will be a gargantuan task: renovating 90 million buildings across many countries is a hard problem.

Plans’ mission is to decarbonise buildings faster, by making renovations easy and accessible.

We’ve secured a robust funding of 11M€ from high-caliber investors, including the likes of Lowercarbon, Norrsken VC, Partech, Foundamental, and MCJ Collective.

About the role

Over the last couple of years we’ve built the foundation: building data now flows end-to-end, from our iOS capture app, through the platform, out to the deliverables our customers depend on. The pipes work. What’s next is quality, and reach.

We’re a capable, product-minded team that ships. Design and UX is the one area where we’re good but not yet great — and that’s exactly the gap we want to close. We’re hiring a Design Engineer to strengthen the team here: to bring depth of craft where we’re currently thin, and to raise the whole team’s bar rather than to shoulder design alone.

Concretely, that means two things. First, help take the surfaces we already have from good-enough to genuinely great, where the UX and UI decide whether someone trusts the output and actually understands it. Second, help us explore new directions — designing net-new interfaces and new deliverables for audiences we don’t serve yet.

This is design across every platform, not just the web. Our product spans an iOS capture app, a web platform, and the documents and reports we generate for people downstream — and it should feel like one coherent product across all of them. Your craft raises the bar everywhere it lives.

Think of it as the deep stroke of a T. You’re a specialist in design engineering, where design taste meets shipped code, joining a team that’s broad and strong but wants more depth here. You’ll prototype to explore an idea, then ship the real thing: writing production frontend on the web yourself, and shaping the native iOS experience hand-in-hand with our iOS engineers. You care about how a product feels to use, and you’d rather make it happen than write a spec for someone else to make happen. You’re not an artist looking for a canvas; you’re a maker who wants the thing shipped and good.

The vast majority of our code is AI-assisted (Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and whatever comes next). This is central to how the role strengthens everyone: the aim isn’t only your own output, it’s raising everyone’s first pass, by putting your taste into shared components, design-system primitives, reviews, and the rules our tooling follows, so good design becomes the default rather than something that rests on one person.

This role is based at Plans’ HQ in Copenhagen. We work from the office together — it’s how we build.

We’ve written this as a mid-to-senior role and are open on level. We care more about depth of craft and the instinct to lift the people around you than about years on paper — and a more senior hire would naturally have more influence over the design system and consistency across surfaces as we grow.

What you will do

  • Raise the bar, everywhere. Help take real surfaces from good-enough to great — across the iOS capture app, the web platform, and the deliverables that go out to the people who depend on them. This is the core of the job.
  • Bring depth of craft across platforms. Push the UX/UI quality on every surface — mobile, web, and the documents we generate — so it feels like one coherent product. You’re the person who goes deep here, working with the team rather than gatekeeping it.
  • Prototype, then ship it for real. Explore quickly in prototypes, then get it shipped: write the final web frontend yourself (React/TypeScript) and drive the native app’s design closely with our iOS engineers. The prototype is how you find the answer; the shipped product is the deliverable.
  • Make the whole team’s first pass great. This is the heart of the role. The vast majority of our code is AI-assisted (Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.), so put your taste where it scales: shared components, design-system primitives, reviews, and the rules and prompts our tooling follows — so what everyone ships lands polished by default, and good design doesn’t rest on one person.
  • Start the design system. Turn one-off polish into shared patterns, so quality compounds across surfaces instead of getting re-litigated on every screen.
  • Explore new directions. Prototype net-new interfaces and new deliverables for stakeholders we don’t serve yet, helping figure out what building data should look like for a new audience before it’s a committed roadmap item.
  • Partner across the team. Work closely with product, engineering, and the people who consume our data downstream, so each surface communicates the right thing to the right audience.
  • Sweat the details that build trust. Hierarchy, typography, empty and error and loading states, optical alignment, solid interaction. Make a domain that isn’t naturally beautiful — energy data, inspections, compliance documents — feel clear and simple anyway.

Who you are

Must-haves:

  • You ship production frontend in React, TypeScript and CSS, and you’re comfortable owning a surface end-to-end in the codebase — from prototype to production.
  • You design across platforms, not just the web. You’re at home shaping mobile/native and print/document surfaces too, and you understand what makes each one feel right rather than treating them all as a browser.
  • You have strong, demonstrable UX/UI craft — enough depth that you make the work around you better. Your portfolio or shipped work shows taste for hierarchy, typography, interaction and feel, and you’re comfortable driving quality without waiting for someone to hand you a spec.
  • You have a maker temperament. You want to make it happen, not hand off a spec, and you’re energised by shipping polished product that feels good to use.
  • You are fluent with, or genuinely eager about, AI-assisted development. The vast majority of our code is AI-assisted (Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.). You know the point isn’t only your own output — it’s raising everyone’s first-pass quality by encoding your taste into shared components, primitives and the rules our tooling follows.
  • You work from a user and real-world-value lens. You’re comfortable with early-stage ambiguity, and comfortable being the one who decides.
  • You make the team better. You collaborate well with product and engineering, you carry the design perspective into the room, and you’re energised by lifting the people around you rather than owning a walled garden.
  • You are passionate about contributing meaningfully, concretely and positively to fighting climate change. Not all the work we’ll be doing is the most glorious, but we’re here to solve a climate problem, and solving it is our first priority.

Great-to-haves:

  • You’ve built or seeded a design system before.
  • You have exposure to data-heavy or 3D/AR product surfaces.
  • You’re comfortable with motion and micro-interactions (welcome, though not the focus of this role).
  • You can get hands-on in native iOS yourself (SwiftUI, or a willingness to learn it), or you’ve shipped mobile design closely alongside native engineers.
  • You’re familiar with or interested in backend development. Versatility is always a plus in startups!

Even if you feel like you don’t meet all the “must-have” requirements for this role, we encourage you to apply anyway. We know that the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can get in the way of companies meeting incredible candidates, and we don’t want them to get in the way of meeting you.

  • Six weeks of paid vacation per year.
  • Reimbursement of home internet and phone plans.
